Population and Growth

The City of Leawood was incorporated in 1948 with slightly more than 1,000 inhabitants. The last fifty plus years have been prosperous - today the City's population is exceeding 30,000 residents. Since 1992, Leawood has had one of the fastest growing populations in the State of Kansas.

The City of Leawood has one of the strongest educational bases to draw from in the nation, in both pre- and post-high school opportunities. The results of the City's commitment to high quality education appear in the percentage statistics of the Leawood population having attained various levels of education, from high school through college.

Leawoods elementary and secondary educational facilities include six public schools in two districts. Shawnee Mission School District #512 has had constant enrollment while Blue Valley #229 district has seen rapid growth.  Both of these districts have achieved "Gold Medal" ratings from Expansion Management.

While Brookwood Elementary is the only Shawnee Mission School located within Leawood, Shawnee Mission East High School and Mission Valley Middle School serve Leawood's youth as well.
