Leawood
Pavement Management System
The
Pavement Management System is a program that calculates pavement index to aid
in preventative maintenance. The goal is to do preventative maintenance to prolong
pavement life.
The Life of a Leawood Roadway:
Year 1 – Construction
Year 2 - Year 7 – Crack Seal
Year 8 – Slurry Seal
Year 9 – Year 14 – Crack Seal
Year 15 – Slurry seal (base repairs as needed)
Year 16 – Year 21 – Crack Seal
Year 22 Mill and Overlay (base repairs as needed)
By adopting this maintenance program, the City hopes to prevent the necessity
of the more costly and disruptive process of reconstructing a street. Many of
the streets, mostly north of I-435, have already deteriorated to the point where
a complete reconstruction is necessary. The City is now attempting to balance
a plan of preventative maintenance on newer streets with the reconstruction
of older streets within the budget constraints.
How do they determine when a street
needs maintenance?
Every two years the Engineering/Design Division
rates all of the streets. The streets are rated on several factors which are
combined to give an overall rating. This overall rating is used to determine
when a street is scheduled for maintenance and what type of maintenance it will
receive.
