Types of Street Maintenance
Crack
Seal
This is a form of street preservation consists of filling the cracks
in the roadway surface with a rubberized crack sealant material. Since it is
possible to drive on the crack sealant material immediately, no street closure
is necessary.
Slurry seal
This form of street preservation consists of coating the surface
of the existing pavement with a ¼ inch mixture of oil, emulsion, sand,
water, cement, and fine aggregate. The streets being sealed will be closed to
traffic for approximately 6 to 8 hours after the process is complete. Typically,
the contractor will do entire subdivisions at one time and residents will be
given 24 hour notice prior to the work beginning. The City uses slurry seal
in lieu of chip and seal because it is much less dusty and rocky.
Mill
and Overlay
This consists of milling the surface of the existing pavements
and laying down a new asphalt surface. Typically this will replace the top 2
to 4 inches of asphalt pavement. Spot curb repairs and base repairs are sometimes
included depending on the condition of the road. This process usually takes
two weeks to complete. Residents will have access to their properties at all
times except the day(s) when the surface is placed. The contractors are required
to give 48 hours notice prior to placing the surface.
Reconstruction
This consists of removing and reconstructing all pavement, curbs, storm sewers,
a portion of each driveway, and sidewalks (where applicable). See Reconstruction
Process.
