  • Preparing all City Council Agendas and packet material.

  • Maintaining all City records, proceedings and ordinances.

  • Provides information pertaining to City Council proceedings to general public and other City Departments.

  • Issuing cereal malt beverage, drinking establishment and liquor store licenses.

The City was incorporated as a First Class City on December 31, 1998. The current population of the City of Leawood is 31,860. The City of Leawood operates under a Mayor-Council form of government. The City is served by a Mayor and eight [8] Councilmembers, which makes up the ‘Governing Body.' The City is divided into four [4] Council wards. There are two [2] Councilmembers in each ward who serve staggered terms. Elected Officials, including the Mayor, serve for four [4] year terms.

Filing for Office:
Potential candidates who are interested in filing for office:

1. Must be 18 years of age or older
2. Must be actual resident of the ward for which he or she is filing

Filing Forms/Fees:

$10.00 - Non-refundable Filing Fee payable to the Election Commissioner
$35.00 - Report Fee payable to the City of Leawood then forwarded to State Treasurer’s office
Payment must be made in cash or 2 separate checks.

In lieu of paying the $10.00 non-refundable Filing Fee, candidates may file by petition. The petition must have signatures of 1% of the ballots cast in the district at the last general city election or 50 signatures, whichever is less. The completed form must be filed in the City Clerk’s office by the filing deadline. The $35.00 report fee is required.

Potential candidates who are interested in filing must file the below described forms:

Declaration of Intent: This form must be signed in the presence of the City Clerk and filed in that office during regular business hours. The City will forward a copy of the form to Johnson County Election Office and Kansas Governmental Ethics Commission

Statement of Substantial Interests for Local Office : Each candidate may complete, sign and file this form when filing the Declaration of Intent, or may be complete and return it to the City Clerk's office no later than 10 days after the filing deadline.
