X Art

John Northington is a graduate of the Kansas City Art Institute where he currently teaches. Originally from California, he now makes Kansas City his home. His work can be seen locally and around the country.

Northington works in concrete, steel and glass, materials that are commonplace. By molding, forming and then partially destroying them, he gives his sculptures an aged look and a soul. His work evokes elements of nature, archaeology. He uses industrial materials to create what he feels are fossils of used cities.

"X" is constructed of criss-crossing cast glass, with a torch cut steel base. It stands gracefully on a wedge-shaped pedestal.

This work of art was originally part of the Leawood Art on Loan program. It was the fifth installation of this program. During the year of the Art on Loan program "X" was installed in the lobby of City Hall. Following the loan period, during which the piece received positive responses, it was purchased by the City and move to the lower level of the building.
