Conservation -

ConservationStream Teams: In 2010, the Green Team formed the first Leawood Stream Teams. Citizens are trained to test Leawood stream waters on a regular basis. The collected data who want is used to preserve and improve the quality of water in the region.

Rain GardenRain Gardens:
Leawood created two Rain Gardens in 2010. Rain Gardens are shallow, constructed depression planted with deep-rooted native plants & grasses, strategically placed to receive runoff from hard surfaces such as roofs, sidewalks or driveways.

 

Green Mobility - Bicycle Friendly Community

Girls BikingThe Bicycle Friendly Committee (BFC) strives to design and implement safe walk/bike routes throughout the city. On October 6, 2010, the committee presented the first International Safe Walk/ Ride to School event at Corinth Elementary, Mission Trail, and Cure of Ars Elementary schools. Participation certificates were awarded to over 400 students for walking or riding to school that day! The BFC'sBikes coordinated efforts with Revolve KC, Leawood Planning, Leawood Police, Leawood Parks and Recreation departments, encourages citizens to walk and ride to schools, churches, and commercial areas using safer routes.

Recycling -

Gauntlet ChallengeGreen Gauntlet Challenge
To be the 1st City in Johnson County to achieve 100% household participation in curbside recycling.

 

The Green Team and the Johnson County Environmental Department invite Leawood's 55 Homes Associations to take up the Gauntlet and achieve100% of participation in curbside recycling.

 

E-WasteE-Waste
Coordinating biannually with Overland Park and other cities, e-waste events in order to recycle electronic equipment and keep it out of our landfills.


Waste Management Programs
The Green Team assists homes associations with their waste management contracts to increase recycling and reduce yard waste in our landfills. Other programs like Large Item Recirculation Day help to keep unwanted trash out in our landfills.


Recycle Building Materials Habitat for Humanity Drop off Site


No need to drive to the city, every Saturday Habitat for Humanity operates a drop off cite at Lowe’s of Kansas City at 133rd & Stateline! Donations of furniture and building materials welcome.
