Gene Hunter became a firefighter for the City of Leawood in 1986 and was appointed Fire Marshal in 1991.  Chief Hunter earned a Bachelor degree from the University of Kansas in 1985 and an Associate degree in Fire Prevention from Johnson County Community College in 1993.  Chief Hunter has twice chaired the Johnson County Fire and Burn Prevention Committee and is a member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs and the Kansas Fire Marshal’s Association.  Other professional associations include:

 

  • Certified Fire Inspector - International Code Council
  • Certified Building Official - International Code Council
  • Certified Fire Investigator - International Association of Arson Investigators 
  • Member - Johnson County Fire Chiefs Association
  • Member - Heart of America Fire Chiefs Council
  • Member - National Society of Executive Fire Officers
  • Member - International Association of Fire Chiefs

In addition, in 2000 Chief Hunter graduated from the Executive Fire Officer Program at the National Fire Academy in Emmittsburg, Maryland.
