Training Division
The Training Division is responsible for providing comprehensive and realistic training to members of the Fire Department so they may perform in a safe and efficient manner, allowing them to provide the citizens of Leawood with the highest quality of emergency services. The Training Division coordinates initial training for new firefighters and continuing education & training for all Fire Department personnel to improve their knowledge and skills, advance through the Fire Department's Career Development Program, and maintain required state and federal certifications. General areas of concentration include fire suppression, hazardous materials response, emergency medical services, technical rescue services such as ice, water, or high angle rescue, and response to weapons of mass destruction (WMD) incidents. Fire Department training is also coordinated with outside Fire and Emergency Medical Service (EMS) agencies in Johnson County and the surrounding Kansas City metropolitan area, in order to ensure a coordinated response across city, county, or state boundaries.
The Training Division is under the direction of the Training Chief, who coordinates all training and instruction administered by the Fire Department's EMS Training Officers, Captains, and other qualified members of the Fire Department or outside agencies. In addition, the Fire Department provides training to other City employees and the public in areas such as first aid, CPR, the use of automatic external defibrillators (AED), the use of fire extinguishers, and Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT).
