Emergency Medical Training
The primary mission of the Fire Department has always been to prevent fires and minimize their destruction when they get started. Over the years however, the Fire Department has taken responsibility for a number of other emergencies, one of which is the response to medical emergencies. In Leawood and around the country, roughly 70% of all Fire Department responses are to provide aid to an injured or ill person or persons.
In the area of emergency medical response, there are three primary levels of training for field personnel, First Responder, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), and Paramedic or Emergency Medical Intensive Care Technician (EMICT). First Responder is the lowest level of certification and training, while EMICT is the highest. Currently, our firefighters are all trained as Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) and can provide basic life support during a medical emergency. For incidents requiring advanced life support, Johnson County Med-Act responds along with the Fire Department. Each year many training hours are devoted to improving the didactic and practical skills of our firefighters in order to effectively respond to medical emergencies.
This area of our website is used to showcase some of the emergency medical training we do in Leawood, as well as some of the training we do with Johnson County Med-Act and other responding agencies. Should you ever have questions about our training program or anything else you see here, please don't hesitate to contact me.
