Many hazardous materials can be found in homes and businesses as well as being transported by road and rail. The Leawood Fire Department has primary responsibility to respond to emergencies involving the spill or release of hazardous materials. In addition, the Fire Department responds to incidents involving weapons of mass destruction (WMD) such as chemical, biological, radioactive, or nuclear events.
In the area of hazardous materials response, there are three primary levels of training and certification: Awareness, Operations, and Technician. Awareness is the lowest level of certification allowing responders to identify substances and isolate scenes. Operations is the mid-level certification allowing for defensive (protective) operations and decontamination. Technician is the highest level of certification allowing for offensive operations designed to mitigate the emergency. Currently, our firefighters are all trained to the Operations level. Each year many training hours are devoted to improving the didactic and practical skills of our firefighters in order to effectively respond to hazardous materials incidents. For incidents in Leawood requiring a higher level of response, specialized teams are called in from other jurisdictions under existing automatic or mutual aid agreements.
