All concerts are free and begin at 6:00 pm.

The series continues with a concert by David Basse on August 19th. Basse has been at the forefront of the KC jazz community for over 20 years. After focusing on his vocals for the past decade, David has returned to the drums, his primary instrument. He has teamed up with bassist Joe Straws and multi-instrumentalist Greg Richter to form the David Basse Trio.

This concert will be part of the 2018 Charlie Parker Celebration that takes place throughout the Kansas City area August 16-25. KC Jazz Alive will present the Artist in Residence, Tivon Pennicott to perform with the David Basse Trio.

Three time Grammy winning tenor saxophonist, Tivon Pennicott will travel from New York City to participate in the Charlie Parker Celebration. Tivon’s unique style incorporates his masterful attention to rhythm, melodic line and deep understanding of the groove.

David Basse is one of Kansas City’s best-known performers. With several albums to his credit and an award-winning career in radio, David’s warm and inviting voice draws listeners into the world of jazz. Basse has recorded with Sandra Booker, Larry Bunker, Jay McShann, Bobby Watson, and Phil Woods. He produced a Grammy-nominated album for pianist Mike Melvoin in 2002. His City Light Orchestra received an International Jazz Hall of Fame award from the Charlie Parker Memorial Foundation. David has performed in Hong Kong, London, Los Angeles, New York City, and in 2018 with the Kansas City Symphony.

Greg Richter began arranging music for David in 1999. The pair reached the top 40 of jazz in 2002 with “Old Friends, New Point.” They recorded together in 2004 with Jay McShann on “I Went Back to Kansas City.” In 2016, Greg became the Musical Director of the Charlie Parker Memorial Foundation.

Joe Straws is equally at home playing jazz and reggae music. A native of Kansas City, Joe spent more than a decade living on the island of St. Croix and then in Washington, D.C. During that time, he and Greg found a mentor in clarinetist Jimmy Hamilton. Now, back in Kansas City, Joe is featured with David in a YouTube video of the song “Compared to What.”

The long association of these three musicians comes translates to an easy rapport of musical dialogue, spiced with much laughter as the three share a genuine joy in playing the music.

After many years of performing across the country and around the world, this is home. “I love the rich heritage and vibrant jazz scene that the area has to offer” says Basse. David continues to speak publicly on the merits and musical heritage of Kansas City.

David has been an annual favorite of this concert series. This free concert will be held inside the Lodge at Ironwoods Park, 14701 Mission Road, Leawood, KS 66224.

Please join the Leawood Arts Council for our free Sundays in the Park Concert Series.
