Oxford School Hosts Prairie Book Club

The Historic One-Room Oxford Schoolhouse, located in Ironwoods Park at 147th & Mission Road, Leawood Kansas, will hold a reading club every Wednesday starting June 6th through July 18th from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. Each week a costumed turn of the century schoolteacher will read chapters from a book of historical fiction. The Book Club will be of interest to boys and girls, ages 5 -10.

This summer the Prairie Book Club will be reading and examining the first and most famous American Fairy Tale “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” by L. Frank Baum. Published 112 years ago, The Wizard of Oz remains one of the most loved stories of all time by children throughout the world.

Our story follows Dorothy and her dog Toto on their adventure from the Kansas prairie in 1900 through the Land of Oz. In addition to the reading, each session will include historic games, crafts or activities. Children will also be able to compare the book with the familiar film from 1939.

Children may come for all six sessions or they may select individual weeks. The cost is $3 per session, per child. Reservations are not necessary.

The Historic Oxford Schoolhouse is also available for programs year-round to groups of all ages by appointment any day or time, except during open house hours. Special events and workshops are offered throughout the year. Come by the schoolhouse to pick up a 2012 Events Calendar.
