LEAWOOD ARTS COUNCIL JAZZ SERIES BEGINS WITH A CONCERT BY THE SONS OF BRASIL

The Leawood Arts Council will host a Jazz Concert Series each Sunday evening, August 19th through September 2nd. The concerts will be held at the Ironwoods Amphitheater in Ironwoods Park at 14701 Mission Road. All concerts are free and will begin at 6:00 pm.

The 2012 series will kick off on August 19th with Stan Kessler and The Sons of Brasil. Known for their Brazilian Jazz stylings, the group explores the genres of Samba, Bossa Nova, Baiao and Afoxe. Much of their material is original music written by band members.

Band leader, trumpeter, Stan Kessler has assembled some of Kansas City’s finest musicians for the Sons of Brasil’s debut performance in Ironwoods Park. The evening will feature Roger Wilder on piano, Greg Whitfield on bass, drummer Doug Auwarter, and percussionist Gary Helm.

For over 20 years the Sons of Brasil have developed a strong, enthusiastic fan base extending far beyond their Kansas City home. Stan Kessler and the Sons of Brasil prove that a Midwestern band can be successful playing exciting Brazilian-flavored music with spicy sambas and cushy bossa novas. Their reputation as local and regional favorites makes this a “not to be missed event”.

The Jazz Series continues on August 26th with Hard @ Play and concludes on September 2th with David Basse and OJT.

Please join the Leawood Arts Council for this 7th annual free Sundays in the Park Jazz Concert Series in the Ironwoods Park Amphitheater. Some seating is available however, we recommend bringing a blanket and/or lawn chairs. Some refreshments will be available. Picnics are welcomed but alcohol is not allowed within the park.

For more information please call the Leawood Cultural Arts Coordinator at (913) 339-6700 ext. 157.
