LEAWOOD ARTS COUNCIL CONCERT SERIES TO FEATURE
KANSAS CITY ARTIST DAVID BASSE AND OTHER JAZZ GREATS

The Leawood Arts Council will again be hosting the Sundays in the Park Concert Series with performances each Sunday evening, August 13th through September 3rd. All concerts are free and begin at 6:00 pm.

The series continues with a concert by David Basse on August 20th. Vocalist, David Basse has been at the forefront of the KC jazz community for over 20 years. For this performance, David has assembled the best players to add to the band, as three-time Grammy winner Tivon Pennicott and Sullivan Fortner will be traveling from New York to perform as part of the group during this very special concert. The visit is part of the annual Kansas City Charlie Parker Celebration.

More than a vocalist, David Basse's voice has come to represent the jazz and blues of Kansas City. The Kansas City Star called him, "The voice of Kansas City". And following a David Basse performance, poet Maya Angelou exclaimed, "I love the soul that is your voice".
Over the past sixteen years, David has hosted The Jazz Scene on Kansas Public Radio, winning the Kansas Association of Broadcasters award. KPR’s jazz department was awarded, “Best Jazz Station - Small Market,” from Jazzweek. This successful radio show has moved to Monday evening at 9pm as of July 1st.

David’s syndicated programming can be heard in over 100 cities; 12th Street Jump, public radio’s weekly jazz, blues and comedy jam, and Jazz with David Basse. David can be heard locally 91.5 FM Kansas Public Radio and 89.3 KCUR FM.

Basse’s tenth recording, “Live from Pilgrim Chapel…” is available through iTunes and other popular download sites. David and pianist Joe Cartwright recorded the Pilgrim Chapel album in Kansas City, and both musicians have earned the Heritage Musician award from the Pilgrim Center for the Arts.

David has recorded with jazz artists such as Mike Melvoin, Phil Woods and Jay McShann. David has been featured at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and Jazz Aspen Snowmass as well as performing in Los Angeles, New York, Hong Kong and London.

After many years of performing across the country and around the world, this is home. “I love the rich heritage and vibrant jazz scene that the area has to offer” says Basse. David continues to speak publicly on the merits and musical heritage of Kansas City.

David has been an annual favorite of this concert series. Audiences love that Basse performs each year at Ironwoods Park for free. Bring your friends and entire family for a relaxing evening in the park.

The concert will be held at the Ironwoods Amphitheater in Ironwoods Park at 14701 Mission Road. In the event of rain, the event will move into the Lodge at Ironwoods Park.

Some seating is available however, we recommend bringing a blanket and/or lawn chairs. Limited refreshments will be available. Picnics are welcomed but alcohol is not allowed.
