Swim Lessons

Swim Lessons are held at the Leawood Aquatic Center located at 10601 Lee Boulevard. Each session consists of eight 30 minute sessions (Monday-Thursday for two consecutive weeks). Each session includes one water safety lesson.

Session I - June 7 - June 17
Session II - June 21 - July 1
Session III - July 12 - July 22
Session IV - July 26 - August 5

Fee: $42 / Resident Discounted Fee: $37
Refunds are not issued for inclement weather

Parent-Tot Ages 6 months to 2 years
These lessons are designed to help young children develop a comfort level in and around the water. A parent/adult must participate with each child, thus promoting parental involvement, supervision and trust while learning to swim and learning water safety. At this age children will not be accomplished swimmers or learn to survive in the water on their own. (Instructor to student ratio - 1:10)

Preschool - Ages 2-4 years
These lessons are designed to help young children develop a comfort level in and around the water. Children will learn to swim and learn about water safety independently. At this age children will not be accomplished swimmers or learn to survive in the water on their own.

Tadpole - Ages 4-6 years
These lessons are designed for students without previous swimming experience. Includes activities and games geared for younger children to promote water safety and provide a comfort level in an aquatic environment. Goal: An opportunity for a beginning swimmer to experience basic water and safety skills.

Goldfish - Ages 5-7 years
These lessons are primarily taught in shallow water with an introduction to deeper water. They will learn activities and will practice submerging their face in the water while practicing floats, glides and rhythmic breathing. Goal: Introduce students to new water skills and build on water safety knowledge and experience for successful adventures in the water. (Instructor to student ratio 1:6)

Seahorse - Ages 6-10 years
These lessons introduce the students to the crawl, backstroke and other water skills such as: treading water, underwater swimming and diving from the deck. Goal: Increase a student's stamina and endurance.

Seal - Ages 8-10 years
These lessons challenge a student's crawl and backstroke skills and introduce students ot other water skills: sculling, underwater swimming in deep water and open turns. Goal: Enhances previously learned skills and teaches coordination of the breaststroke.

Marlin - Ages 9-11 years
This level is for swimmers who are comfortable in deep water and lap lanes. Lessons are designed to enhance skills and learn advanced skills including: stride jump entry, diving from the board, sidestroke, flip turns and surface dives. Goal: increases endurance and builds on the coordination and improvement or previously learned skills.

Dolphin - Ages 10-15 years
This level is for swimmers who want to pursue competitive swimming skills or build on skill development. Swimmers will continue to perfect stroke development. Additional instruction will include: butterfly stroke, breast and side stroke turns. Goal: Enables a student to perfect their stroke.

How to choose the correct swim level

1. Identify the goal for each level of instruction and the last class completed to determine what level of achievement your child has completed.

2. Skills assessments will be conducted during the first and second lesson dates to ensure proper placement.

IMPORTANT: Child must be 4 years old by June 1, 2010 to participate in
Tadpole through Dolphin Classes

Inclement Weather Information

Lessons will be cancelled to due inclement weather and/or lightning. Cancellation decisions will be made 30 minutes prior to the start of each class. Cancellation information will be on the rain-out line (913) 982-2433 no earlier than 30 minutes prior to the start of each class.

Water safety day will be held upon the first inclement weather day. If there should be two inclement days, the second class will be made up on the Friday of the week the weather occurred. More than 1 day of inclement weather in one week, lessons will not be made up.

Dive Lessons

Come learn the basics of diving at the Leawood Aquatic Center. Instructors will work with beginning and advanced students who want to learn new things and perfect their skills. (Instructor to student ratio 1:6)

Lessons consist of four - 1 hour sessions. Classes meet Monday - Thursday
