GRINNIN’ & GROVIN’ CULTURAL EVENTS FOR KIDS

The Leawood Arts Council, in conjunction with the Parks and Recreation Department, will provide “Grinnin’ & Groovin’” entertainment for the entire family each Tuesday, June 2nd through June 30th. The event series will kick-off with a concert by puppet show by StoneLion Puppets on Tuesday, June 2nd.

“Down the Drain” is an environmental message presented by a cast of colorful characters. Felicia Flash, wildlife photographer and her side-kick, Karma the elephant follow a sewer rat down the drain. The drain opens up a new world for our duo as they discover what our watershed is, its connection to the ecosystem and how we can make a difference.

The rat is upset when thoughtless humans decide to use his storm sewer drain as a trash can. He is put in danger when an oil barrel lands on his head trapping him inside as it floats out to sea. Can Felicia and Karma save him in time?

This indoor show will be held at the Lodge at Ironwoods Park, located at 147th & Mission Road.

The series continues on June 9th with a Funky Mama concert. Funky Mama is a kids’ favorite performer around the region. Her dynamic energy and bold funk/soul singing style will have the whole family on their feet. Funky Mama has a big voice with easy to understand lyrics.

Ventriloquist, Kevin Horner takes the stage on June 16. The man with a thousand voices will provide an energetic, fun performance suitable for both children and adults. Kevin has over 20 years of experience using a combination of illusions, ventriloquism and stand-up comedy Horner is a 3 times People’s Choice Award winner for the art of Ventriloquism.

Dino O’Dell’s concert will rock the park on June 23rd. Dino sings and plays in this celebration of cultures. His Jamaican reggae, English ska, German polka and American rock & roll, rap and country music will have kids dancing making him a favorite performer.

The series wraps up with a comedic juggling show by Brian Wendling on June 30th. Brian Wendling has been a favorite with Kansas City area audiences for decades. He pops ping-pong balls out of his mouth, bounces balls on a drum, spins ropes, and weaves magic with a Chinese yo-yo. Whether he is climbing an unsupported ladder or performing feats on a rolling globe, he will grab your attention… and keep you laughing!

Each program will begin at 9:30 a.m. and will last approximately one hour. Bring your entire family for fun-filled entertainment that will thrill children of all ages. Performances will be held outdoors in the Ironwoods Amphitheater or in the case of rain, extreme heat, or by the needs of the performers (such as StoneLion Puppet Show) events will move inside the Lodge at Ironwoods Park. The Lodge offers floor and chair seating.

The amphitheater has some concrete risers for seating but lawn chairs, blankets and sunscreen are recommended. There are no concessions available at Ironwoods Park but picnics are welcomed. Dogs must be on a leash.

Please plan for extra time in getting to the park this summer due to the road closure at 143rd and Mission Road. We suggest that drivers take Nall Avenue or Kenneth Road to 151st and Mission and turn north on Mission to access Ironwoods Park.

Come to Ironwoods Park to enjoy the entertainment and stay to visit the Historic Oxford Schoolhouse or the Prairie Oak Nature Center.
