Oxford School Hosts Old Time Fun Series
The Historic One-Room Oxford Schoolhouse, located in Ironwoods Park at 147th & Mission Road, Leawood Kansas, will hold fun series every Wednesday in June and July from 9:30 to 11:00 am. Each week a costumed turn-of-the-century schoolteacher will introduce the history of games and activities as the children participate. The Old Time Fun Series will be of primary interest to boys and girls, ages 5 - 10.
Children may come for all nine sessions or they may select individual weeks. The cost is $3 per session, per child. Reservations are not necessary.
The Old Time Fun schedule for the summer will be as follows:
June 3 - Games of Skill
Including such games as Stilts, Horseshoes, Stick Ball
June 10 - Hopping Games
Including such games as Jump Rope, Hop Scotch, Leap Frog
June 17 - Corn Husk Doll Craft
Including male and female characters
June 24 - Running Games
Including such games as Hide and Seek, Kitty Wants a Corner, Kick the Can
July 1 - Hunts
Including such activities as a Scavenger Hunt and making Nature’s Artwork
July 8 - Reading – “Oliver Twist” part I
The schoolmaster will read the junior version of this Charles Dickens classic book and will include a do-it-yourself handkerchief
July 15 - Reading – “Oliver Twist” part II
The schoolmaster will read the junior version of this Charles Dickens classic book and will include a game of Drop the Handkerchief
July 22 - Reading – “Oliver Twist” part III
The schoolmaster will read the junior version of this Charles Dickens classic book and will include a visit from Fagin and a game of I Spy
July 29 - Table Games
Including such games as Checkers and Dominoes
Please plan for extra time in getting to the park this summer due to the road closure at 143rd and Mission Road. We suggest that drivers take Nall Avenue or Kenneth Road to 151st and Mission and turn north on Mission to access Ironwoods Park.
Come by the schoolhouse to pick up the Interpretive Site Coalition’s Kansas City’s Passport to Adventure.
The Historic Oxford Schoolhouse is also available for programs year-round to groups of all ages by appointment any day or time, except during open house hours. Special events and workshops are offered throughout the year.
