Oxford School Hosts Old Time Stories and Fun

The Historic One-Room Oxford Schoolhouse, located in Ironwoods Park at 147th & Mission Road, Leawood Kansas, will hold an Old-time Stories and Fun event every Wednesday in June and July from 9:30 to 11:00 am again this year. Each week a costumed turn-of-the-century schoolteacher will read chapters from a book of historical fiction. The events will be of primary interest to boys and girls, 5 through 10 years of age.

This summer we will be reading a great classic of American children’s literature, Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Written over eighty years ago as the second in the Little House series of books, Farmer Boy remains as popular today as when it was when first published. The enduring success of the Little House series of children’s novels is due to the detailed description of life in the 19th Century.

Farmer Boy is based on the childhood of Laura’s husband, Almanzo Wilder, set in 1866 in upstate New York. Sometimes life is hard, but Almanzo and his family are always busy and happy on their farm.

In addition to the reading, each session will include historic games, crafts or activities related to the reading.

Children may come for all nine sessions or they may select individual weeks. The cost is $3 per session, per child. Reservations are not necessary.

The Historic Oxford Schoolhouse is also available for programs year-round to groups of all ages by appointment any day or time, except during open house hours. Special events and workshops are offered throughout the year.

Come by the schoolhouse to pick up the Historic Oxford Schoolhouse 2016 Events Calendar or the Interpretive Site Coalition’s Kansas City’s Passport to Adventure.

For more information go to Leawood's website or you may phone (913) 663-9157 or email aprilb@leawood.org at least one day prior to each session.
