Leawood Stage Company Performs “Once Upon A Mattress”
The Leawood Parks and Recreation Department, in cooperation with the Leawood Stage Company, presents the Broadway musical comedy, Once Upon A Mattress. Join us July 14, 15, 16, 17 & 21, 22, 23 at 8:00 p.m. at the Ironwoods Amphitheater in Ironwoods Park, 147th and Mission Road.
The summer’s big outdoor family musical, Once Upon A Mattress, is the story of “The Princess and The Pea” with a hilarious spin. Princess Winnifred actually swims the moat to reach Prince Dauntless the Drab. Chances are you'll never look at fairy tales the same way again. It wasn't the pea at all that caused the princess a sleepless night. Carried on a wave of wonderful songs, the familiar classic tale of royal courtship provides for some side-splitting shenanigans.
Annette Cook will direct this production. Cook has directed, costumed, and appeared on stage in productions across the metro including LSC. She last directed The Sound of Music for LSC in 2013 and her costumes highlighted last summer’s production of Oliver. She has compiled an excellent staff, an outstanding orchestra, and a talented cast for this production.
Leawood Stage Company presents the highest quality free theater in the area. We offer summer performances free to the public, serving senior citizens on a limited budget or families that might otherwise not be able to afford live theater performances. This is a great way to introduce young audiences to the arts.
Prior to each performance of Once Upon A Mattress, a costume contest will be held for your little Prince and Princesses. Each night the atmosphere of the amphitheater will be enhanced with vendors with food and treats, as well as items for the kids to make or purchase.
On July 16th, 17th and 23rd the Historic Oxford Schoolhouse will offer pre-show activities from 6:30 to 7:45 pm.
Bring the entire family to beautiful Ironwoods Park to enjoy Once Upon A Mattress. Some seating is available at the amphitheater, however we recommend bringing a blanket and/or lawn chairs. Picnics are welcome but alcohol is not allowed in the park. Dogs must be leashed and we request that they not disturb the audience members around them.
