CITY OF LEAWOOD TO OPEN VARIETYKC ALL-INCLUSIVE PLAYGROUND
The Leawood Parks and Recreation Department will be opening the City’s first All Inclusive Playground on Tuesday, June 20 at 10:00 am. The playground will be called The VarietyKC All Inclusive Playground and will be completely accessible for children of all ages and abilities.
The new playground is a result of more than one year of fundraising by the Leawood Foundation who initiated the project. Their mission is “to fund cultural and recreational amenities that might not otherwise be funded by tax dollars.”
“The Parks and Recreation Department is extremely grateful to the Leawood Foundation for its support of this magnificent project. It will do so much to enrich the lives of families in the area by providing much needed physical activity and social interaction”, said Chris Claxton, Director of Parks and Recreation.
Located in one of Leawood’s busiest parks, the new playground will be another meaningful addition to the park system amenities, replacing an old playground built over twenty years ago.
“There were so many generous donors, large and small, that contributed to this project; it is truly overwhelming.” said Claxton.
In addition to the many donors, the Foundation also received equipment, educational and fundraising support from Cunningham Recreation and Play4All, as well as GameTime whose parent company is PlayCore, as the recipient of a grant through the Kansas Recreation and Park Association in 2016. The new playground will be recognized as a National Demonstration Site.
Later this summer, the Foundation will officially turn over the playground to the City as a gift at a meeting of the Leawood Governing Body.
The grand opening will be proceeded by a ribbon cutting ceremony and followed by a short reception in the Lion’s Shelter, adjacent to the playground.
