All Outdoor Education classes will be taught by our Outdoor Education staff at the Prairie Oak Nature Center located in Ironwoods Park (14701 Mission Road).

Learn to Fish

Ages 5 and up

If you have always wanted to give fising a try or just want to refresh the experience, this is the program for you! After a brief introduction to the basics of equipment and fundamentals, enjoy time at the pond "reeling them in".  Equipment and bait provided. Participants should be able to comfortably hold the weight of a cane pole/rod and reel (plus a fish, of course)!  An adult chaperone must accompany any child under the age of 12 years.  We practice "Catch and Release".  A fishing license is not required for our pond. One - 2 hour session.

Muddy Buddies
Ages 3-6 years

Children and their accompanying adults are introduced to nature in a safe, fun and creative environment.  Participants are encouraged to explore nature at their own pace, using a full range of senses, including tactile perception and fine motor skills, taste and smell.  Adults are encouraged to take the role of teacher to hep their children become comfortable with their natural environment, both personally and as part of a group.  May include hiking, stories and indoor / outdoor environmental discovery time. Nine - 1 hour sessions.

A Bird's Life
Ages 6-9 years

Come "Tweet" with us!  Learn about different types of birds and why they are so special.  Enjoy age appropriate activities and a nature walk with binoculars, weather permitting.  All children 12 years or younger must be accompanied by an adult chaperone / participant.  One - 75 minute session.

Bats and Owls
Ages 4 and up

Spend an evening learning about these wonderful creatures and their significant role in the web of life.  Great for families and those interested in beginning or furthering their knowledge about our night time flying creatures.  Find out about the super powers possessed, the basics of flight and what makes these two groups significant to our environment.  A hike to locate potential habitats in Ironwoods Park may be included at the end of this program.  All children 12 years or younger must be accompanied by an adult chaperone / participant.  One - 45 minute session.

Snakes on the Plain
Ages 4  and up

Snakes are important to the midwest ecology.  Find out about common snakes in our region and why they should be "friended", not feared.  Age appropriate activities and information will be presented based upon the enrollees.  All children 12 years or younger must be accompanied by an adult chaperone / participant.  One - 45 miute session.

Tales, Tails and Trails

Parents or adult chaperones will enjoy a nature-themed story and related programming with your child or children.  Discover the wonders of nature while exploring through the eyes of a child.  We encourage full participation in the stories, crafts, hikes and exploration. 3rd Annual Camp out with Dad

Camp under the stars at Ironwoods Park! Various, fun indoor / outdoor activities will be available for all campers. Dinner, smores and a light breakfast will be served.  Please provide your own tent and bedding.

Half-Day Nature Camp
Ages 5-10 years
Perfect for elementary age campers! Join us in a week filled with hiking, exploring, stories, songs, games and crafts. Camp is full of fun learning opportunities as we explore the meadows, woods, creek and pond.

Learn about flora and fauna in our Midwest environment and explore the many ways we can have a positive impact on the sustainability of our local, regional and world resources.

Campers will learn about the importance they bring to the world as individuals, how group interaction and cooperation can create dynamic changes for the future. Four - 4 hour sessions.

Challenge Adventure Camp

Are your kids looking for new challenges?  Then Ironwoods Challenge Course's Challenge Adventure Camp should be your choice this summer!

Experience the Carolina T-Wall, Alpine Tower, Giant Swing and for the 12-14 year olds, the world's only Caribbean Course!

We offer a balance of climbing activities (knots, belaying, commands and technique), teambuilding challenges, survival skills, new fun games to play with friends, brain teasers and above all, just plain fun!  For returning campers ages 12-14, more advanced climbing techniques will be introduced.
