If a game rains out, do we make it up?

Our rain out policy that was instituted several years ago states that we will begin making up rained out games only after the third (3) rain out. When we instituted this policy, we added 1 game to both the Spring and Fall seasons. Previously we scheduled 7 games in the Spring and Fall. The new policy was implemented in 1997 and now we schedule 8 games in both the Spring and Fall seasons. This way the season is laid out completely before we start and if the weather cooperates, our teams will get an extra game per season. This policy was adapted without increasing league fees.

What size of soccer ball will I need?

Our league uses three sizes of soccer balls for play, sizes 3, 4, and 5. All teams 4 years old - Kindergarten use a size 3 soccer ball. All teams 1st grade - 4th grade use a size 4 soccer ball. All teams 5th grade - 8th grade use a size 5 soccer ball. Remember that the league does not provide soccer balls, so we suggest that all players purchase a ball and use those for practices and games.

What does it mean if my team has a 'BYE'?

A "BYE" means that your team does not play that day. These occur when there are an odd number of teams in a league or in special circumstances where days off have been requested. Even with a "BYE", your team will still be scheduled their appropriate number of games.

How many players play on the field at one time?

The Leawood Soccer league currently plays 7 vs. 7 for 4 year olds - 4th grade. From 5th - 8th we play 9 vs. 9.

Do the players receive any type of award each season?

Every player in our league receives a participation award each season that they play. The participation awards are usually some type of medal, trophy, or a carry bag. All of the awards are handed out towards the end of each season and given to the coach of each team to hand out to their players.

When do we receive new jerseys?

All teams receive new jerseys each Fall season and will use these jerseys for that season and the following Spring season. If a team is new to the league in the Spring (which means they didn't play the previous Fall season), they will receive new jerseys for that season. Also, any individual players who are new to a team in the Spring season will receive a new jersey for that season. All jerseys are handed out to the coaches at the coaches meetings held prior to each season. If a player needs a replacement jersey, they are available from Leawood Parks & Recreation for a fee.

Do you have to attend the Coaches Meeting each season?

The league requires that each team send a representative to their designated coaches meeting each season. This representative does not have to be the coach but at least someone who is familiar with the operations of your team. These meetings are important for discussing new information from the league, picking up uniforms, and receiving new handouts for the upcoming season.

Can a player participate with a broken arm, wrist, etc.?

Yes, a player may participate in games and practices if they first, have a signed note from their doctor allowing participation, and second, have attached some sort of padding protection to the cast so that it will not injure them or another player who may come in contact with the cast. As always, the referee has the final say whether or not the player will be allowed to play even if you have a doctor's note. We must have a copy of the doctor's note at City Hall and you must have one for an official to even consider allowing the player to participate.

Are players allowed to wear earrings or any other type of jewelry?

Players are NOT allowed to wear ANY type of jewelry (including earrings) during practices or games. This rule is strictly enforced by league officials. The only exceptions to this rule are medical alert bracelets and necklaces required to be worn at all time by the player's doctor.

When are practice field closings and game cancellations made by?

The league will determine playability of the fields for practices and games daily and will update our rain out line. As always, the Rain Out Line is the first and most current information on field closings. Remember to always check with the Rain Out Line prior to heading to the fields for current updates. It may have been sunny that day but it rained 2 inches the day before, which will close the fields even though it is nice out. The current rain out line phone number is (913) 982-2433 #1.

How do you operate the Rain Out Line?

Our new Rain-Out Line that was implemented in the Spring 2003 season is: (913) 982-2433 then push #1 for the sports line.

I signed up a new individual player this season. When will I find out what team they are on?

Individual players will be placed by grade, gender, and school whenever possible. We start placing our individual players after our registration deadline. We wait till after the deadline so we know all of the teams we have in our league and can make an attempt at placing individual players as close as possible to their school or neighborhood. This process sometimes takes three weeks from the registration deadline due to leaving messages for coaches and waiting to hear back from them. We always contact the coach of a team before adding players to that team and ask that the coach and the parent talk before we finalize any additions. When the coach and parents talk, this will be when the individual player finds out about team practices and games.

The league provides a jersey, what else do the players need to have?

The league requires all players to wear shin guards during practices and games. These can be purchased anywhere sporting goods are sold, such as Dicks Sporting Goods. Other than shin guards, there is no mandatory equipment needed. Many players do purchase soccer cleats, just make sure they are for soccer and not football or baseball. The easiest way to tell is whether or not there is a cleat on the very front toe area of the sole. Other additions to a soccer uniform would be soccer shorts and tall socks that will be worn over the shin guards. The last item needed would be a proper sized soccer ball. Size 3 for 4 year olds - kindergarten. Size 4 for 1st through 4th graders, and size 5 for 5th grade and up. All of these items can be purchased at any sporting goods store such as Dicks Sporting Goods, our league sponsor.
